A Night of Copyright with Rob Monath

We were thrilled to have copyright attorney, Rob Monath give a presentation Tuesday, August 22nd. It was a full gallery. Rob is the husband of Pamlico Writers’ program director and secretary, Mandy Monath and they are a dynamic duo. We will definitely have to have Rob back because I know there were many unanswered questions. There are so many layers to copyright law depending on whether you are writing books, poetry, or even blog articles. Rob did his best to give us the basics but I think he could offer a program every quarter and there would still be more questions to ask.

The one thing I took away as an author is this, fixation. Fixation is an important part of the legal process for copyright. Make notes, document everything. It has to exist in some format in order to be protected.

Copyright law was designed to protect the appropriation of intellectual property (Elizabethan period).

You don’t have to register your copyright for it to be protected. BUT…you cannot go to Federal Court without having registered your copyright prior to going to court. If you wait until you need copyright you might miss out on financial compensation for damages and loss of income prior to the date of registration.

April Happenings

If it’s Tuesday, it’s PWG!

Hi Pamlico Writers–

April has five Tuesdays! See what’s going on, below.  Looking forward to seeing you all whenever you can make it.

As the month rolls on, each week we will check in about our preparation of pieces for our staged readings at Bath Fest. The more the merrier. Remember to keep things appropriate for a general audience.

Finally, April is National Poetry Month. The Poetry in Plain Sight program run by the North Carolina Poetry Society will be sending us posters featuring contest-winning poems, which we will post at various locations in Washington and Beaufort County. This program lasts all year, so be on the lookout for each month’s new poems.

APRIL 2–WHAT ARE YOU READING? 5PM, WINE AND WORD GOURMET, 220 W. Main St., Washington, NC. Let’s get readers and writers together and talk books! Bring whatever book you are currently reading, or bring your all-time favorite, and share what you like (or don’t like) about it and why. All are welcome!

APRIL 9–CRITIQUE SESSION, 7PM, Turnage Theater. Submit your work-in-progress and get supportive and  helpful reactions from your fellow writers and readers. (Submit pieces by Friday, April 5.)

Happy Holidays

Come celebrate with open mic!

Dear Pamlico Writers–

We had a small but mighty group for critiques on Tuesday night. We are doing some amazing writing! The plot thickens everywhere you look. Our favorite American videographer is getting into even more trouble in Germany. A questioning federal employee is being followed by a suspicious stranger. An unfolding and beautiful fantasy landscape is capturing our imaginations. The sounds of thunder and jazz are competing for a poet’s identity. And an irascible grammarian is learning when she’s crossed the line.

To finish out December, we will gather for Open Mic and Christmas cheer at The Main Cup on Tuesday, December 19 at 5:00 pm. Food, coffee, and cider will be provided. Come if you can and bring a friend. We’ve also invited the PamPack Creative Writing Club. If you can’t make it, have a Merry Christmas and we will see you in 2024.
